Class of 2019- Wear Sunscreen

Hello again Brun lovers, Caitlynn here!

Who’s loving the blogs so far?? I know I am! Today I’m here to talk about sunscreen. I know, I know…everyone is always screaming from the rooftops that you should be wearing sunscreen, and I plan to join them. 😊

I know its now October and people are feeling doubtful that they would have a need for sunscreen, but I’m here to tell you that is incorrect. I must admit I’m not a model citizen for applying sunscreen on my BODY in the fall/winter, but I am an advocate for year-round face and neck sunscreen. Though UVB rays are weaker in the winter, those are the rays that give us sunburns, UVA rays are just as strong year-round! UVA rays are the pesky rays that penetrate deep into the skins thickest layer and cause wrinkles and premature aging.

When I was in esthetics school, I learned a very insane/terrifying fact that 70 percent of your skins aging has happened by age 18. What does that mean? It means that from age 0-18, if you haven’t been protecting your skin, the damage has been done and it will slowly emerge to haunt us over the years to come. I went to google to confirm this fact because its been a while since I was in school, and I couldn’t find that specific stat so hopefully its not true. We won’t spend time focusing on that because the past is the past, but we can focus on the present, and the present is SUNSCREEN. We’ve been carrying our favourite sunscreen at Brun for a while now, I’m sure you’ve noticed it on the shelves, it’s called Sunbum. I’m an SPF 50 girl myself, I know most people don’t like to go that high but whether that stat I stated above is true or not, it definitely terrified me into using nothing less than 50 to help preserve my little body as best I can! The other great thing about SPF 50 that I always like to address is that typically no one wants to use it, so no one steals my sunscreen (haha!).

A couple of years ago I learned that people everywhere typically misuse sunscreen. You may be thinking… how? Its sunscreen… you just rub it in and go on with your day. Well, yes and no. I was in Hawaii with family a couple years ago and we were all having the debate about when the sun is the strongest, do you burn in overcast weather, does water exacerbate the suns reflection onto your skin… all the topics of conversation. We got to chatting about how often you should apply sunscreen for actual proper protection. So, thank goodness for smartphones, I googled it. The internet told me that we should be applying it every two hours, even if you’re not going into the water. I thought it was good for more like 4 hours, and then if you went in the water in that time then you should reapply immediately when you get out. This information got me thinking about how much damage I’ve done to my skin whilst thinking I’m protecting my skin enough. Very overwhelming. Sun damage is one of those things that you can’t really see until years to come. Once again, the past is the past, and all we can do is focus on trying to be better with all the information that we learn all the time! Whether its SPF 15 or SPF 50, we’ve got to be using something! Sunbum is a broad-spectrum sunscreen which protects against UVA and UVB. Its super important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen because otherwise the sunscreen you have is only protecting against ONE of the UV rays, and you need to be protected from both! I assume all sunscreens are broad in 2019 but I MAY be incorrect so check your bottles... or just pickup a bottle of Sunbum at your next visit to the BBB.
